Bride: Ashleigh

I was so happy to be a part of this day for Ashleigh. She had so much joy and love for her husband and children. From my understanding, she did not have the opportunity to get all glammed up on her wedding day, so when she had the opportunity to do it again she jumped at it! It was a huge blessing to see her love for her husband shine through and to be apart of such a beautiful day. Thanks for letting me be apart of this Ashleigh!

Relocation & Flavia B.

August 19, 2011 marked the last day of local California work. Makeup by Sara Colello will be relocating to Phoenix, Arizona and its surrounding areas. So what better way than to end it on a photoshoot with a beautiful model from Romania, Flavia. It was a beautiful evening in a part of Irvine I have never encountered before, and I am thankful. My sister joined me to get a taste of what my work is like; when we entered the studio it was beautiful. A room of wardrobe, an area for makeup, and the lights on the backdrop set the tone for the shoot. Flavia arrived and was ready to go; it was a light hearted shoot with lots of laughs exchanged behind the scenes. It was a great pleasure working with her and the photographer, Kin Vong; a perfect way to spend my last local Cali shoot.

Laguna Photo Shoot

It was a beautiful, slightly chilly afternoon down by the beach. The rocky steps led down to a large, weathered tree which had obviously been visited many times by the looks of the marks on it's trunk. Leaves littered the ground providing the feel of autumn in the middle of the summer. Further down the rocky steps there let out a beautiful view of the ocean in the distance, while bushes, plants, and "weeds" grew wild - a perfect scene for an outdoor shoot. Walk down the pathway to the left, and you find a house in the background and some more trees, some brush, and a wrought iron gate. Follow the path down and you hit the beach just as the sun starts to set - painting the sky and leaving for a gorgeous photo opportunity.
The photoshoot was last minute; I received a message around 2:30PM and was getting the models ready around 3:00PM for a 5:00PM shoot. I was blessed to have received some great lessons through this experience and I look forward to more opportunities to apply these lessons in the future. I also have a new found respect for photographers, their art, dedication, and passion.

Product Review: Unite Eurotherapy Seven Seconds Dry Shampoo

My husband is a hairstylist, so naturally we have a bunch of great (and some not-so-great) hair product at our home, so I decided to take it upon myself to review one of them. Let's just say presently I'm in love.

Normally, I wash my hair every other day (if I remember to not wash it that is) honestly, I don't remember why - something about when you wash your hair frequently your body starts over producing oil...or something like that. I'll get the hairstylist answer when Anthony gets home. Now that it (my hair) is presently red, each time I get my hair wet a little bit of the color comes out - causing it to fade faster than I would like (granted, I would like it to just not fade or grow out -but apparently this is the real world and that doesn't happen here.)- my hair is very porous after the process of making it blonde. Due to the fact that I can't wet my hair as frequently at the moment, my husband brought home this hot little number. Like I said before, I'm in love.

Besides the fact that the entire Unite Eurotherapy product line smells yummy, unlike every other product line I've tried (I won't name names), this product is just fabulous! Just a few sprays and my hair is back to looking fresh! One thing of note: You actually have to spray it on your roots, unlike other hair products. Probably not rocket science for most, but it took me a couple days to figure that one out - and I only really figured it out because my hubby caught me attempting to use it unsuccessfully. Anyways, the Unite Eurotherapy website is right on with it's product statements. I personally tested each statement:
1.The company states that it "Aids in preserving hair color". Definitely true! Red is a very difficult color to keep. The first go around, I did not use this product and let me tell you, my hair faded to a nice 5th Element orange rather quickly (It was about 5 days). The second go around, I believe we're at 2 or 3 weeks of color and it's still red, lighter, but still red. It has faded since I do still wet my hair and wash it with real shampoo, but because I am doing it less frequently it's maintaining quite nicely.
2. "Removes excess oil" - Again, definitely true! I cannot stand the look or feel of oily hair (YUCK!), and it tends to get rather oily, especially since I'm trying to cut back on the frequency I shampoo it in the shower. This product removes the oil, making my hair look like it was just washed- nice and fresh and clean!
3. "Increases Volume" - My hair is naturally pretty flat, I have to work at it to get volume and usually, the day after washing it doesn't want to do anything that even slightly resembles volume - even with working it. After using this product, it gives it more volume so my hair doesn't appear to be flat against my head.
4. "No visible powder" - Now, I personally have not used any other dry shampoo besides this one, but I have been informed by my girlfriends who have asked me about this product if it leaves a powdery residue like other dry shampoos they have tried (this tends to be the main reason they are weary of giving it a shot). It doesn't! Another great selling point, if you ask me.
5. "Refreshes hair without the use of water" - Yes, yes, yes! I know I have already touched on this, but it is so true. My hair is definitely looking refreshed and clean after using this product. And the best part is,,,,
6. "You'll never be late for Happy Hour again!" - Ok, this one I have not personally tested. I don't believe I have ever been to a happy hour, BUT -You won't be late for work, church events, appointments because of your hair needing a wash before going out. (Granted, there are a number of other ways you can make up for that - I struggle with that).
With this product you spray it on your roots, lightly dust it with your hand and viola! Pretty, fresh, ready to go hair in, you guessed it, 7 seconds!

So there you have it, there's my review on my new favorite hair product!

Product Review: TooFaced Eye Shadow Insurance

Hello lovelies! I'm going to try and keep up PRW again - even though we're in the midst of an out of state move, I anticipate having more free time and some of you have been asking for it to come back - so here it is and I'll try to be better at maintaining it. :)
As a make up artist, I want my clients' make up to last throughout the entire day; not necessarily for only a few hours and in the past I noticed that my eyeshadow not only appeared a different color when I applied it to my own lids, but that it also wouldn't last the entire day - not something I wanted to run into with my clients. I recieved "Shadow Insurance" by Too Faced as a gift from Sephora and I absolutely love it! I usually apply it with either a clean finger or a clean small shadow brush - sometimes it appears stripey from the brush - but if you practice you'll find a technique that works for you that will get it applied evenly with a brush. (The faster, easier way is to use your finger though-ring or pinky work best). Shadow Insurance comes out in a beige color which helps the shadows true color pigmentation come out without the yellow or pink tones of your skin coming through. When using this product, make sure that you allow it time to dry a but before applying eyeshadow - the eyeshadow will not blend well if it's applied while the Shadow Insurance is still rather wet and it can also appear uneven/a little clumpy so give it a few seconds to set to avoid that and you'll get a truer color as well as lasting. It is FANTASTIC and helping your shadow last all day without it falling or getting lighter!

This is one product that I consider a MUST HAVE for my kit; it really does make a difference!!

Bride: Amber

I was blessed with the opportunity to be a part of Amber's wedding on July 2nd. It was a fairytale. As I drove up the Ortegas, I knew that this was going to be a special day. I arrived at a beautiful home to help assist the bride, who happens to be just as beautiful. As I walked in, the horses were being groomed and prepared for the ceremony and I had the priviledge of seeing all of her little personal touches for her wedding. Amber herself was very calm adn collected; she was definitely ready for this day. I was only able to snap a few shots before the wedding, and she graciously invited me to stay for the ceremony. She rode up in a old Ford truck and when the "I do's" were said, Amber and Nick road away on horseback. It was the cutest thing I have ever seen at wedding.

Tropical Sunset: Sarah S.

For the past 6 months or so I have been mainly doing night out or dance make up, so when I had the opportunity to collaborate with Erin Kaye Photography and Sarah S. on a photo shoot I jumped at it. Sarah was such a blast to work with; up for anything and hilarious - there was not a dull moment working with her.

Product Review: Femme Couture Eye Make-Up Remover

Like many women I spend time on my make-up; probably more time than most, but that's another story. One of the biggest issues I have found from talking with my clients and from personal experiance is that eyeliner and mascara are a pain to fully remove. I found Femme Couture Eye Make-Up Remover at Sally's Beauty Supply and decided to give it a shot.
Sally's webiste gives the following product information on FC Eye Make-Up Remover:
  • Gently dissolves eye makeup
  • Soothing and refreshing
  • Oil and fragrance free
Femme Couture Eye Makeup Remover features a gentle but effective formula that quickly dissolves and helps remove even the most stubborn eye makeup. It soothes and refreshes the delicate skin around the eyes. "
I will agree that it is oil and fragrance free as well as effective; all of which is great news for your skin! However, if you have very sensitive skin like I do, you will find that it is not necessarily smoothing and refreshing. While I've used about 65% of the bottle due in part to it's fantastic effectiveness, it is definitely not soothing and refreshing for sensitive skin. It burns quite a bit and is definitely something I try not to use becuase it irritates my skin so much. If you're looking for something that is effective and gentle, Neutrogena's Makeup Remover wipes are just as effective, though you do have to scrub a bit, but it's still gentle and does not burn or sting the face.

Now, I don't know how this product works on someone who doesn't have very sensitive skin. It may be soothing and refreshing - but I would definitely steer clear of this if you know you have sensitive skin or if you are working on a client.

Wednesday, April 6, 2011

The answer was posed recently as to what my top 5 beauty must haves are and since this involves products - I figured it would be a good one to post for this weeks Product Review Wednesday. More products, shorter reviews...
SmashBox or Bare Minerals Face Primer.
- It makes my skin feel smooth and moisturized before I apply any kind of foundation or loose powder without it causing my face to become super red and splotchy which my moisturizer tends to do. And it has a really neat texture to it, talc I believe - and I say that purely based off the fact that it reminds me of a lotion my mom used to get at VS that had talc in it.

Unite Eurotherapy Boosta Spray.
-Love love love it! My hair likes to be flat a lot- or maybe it's that I prefer big hair (I do like Texas hair)- , so a few sprays of this and a blow dry and I'm good to go :)
Eyeliner -

So far my favorite is QuickEyeliner by Clinique, but I'm looking forward to trying MAC's gel liner.

Hello Kitty Lip Conditioner
- I love the way it smells and feels and that it comes in a different colors, so it's not just a chapstick and it's not just a lip tint. It gives you color while moisturizing! And sadly, mine has gone missing - not OK. Luckily, there's a MAC across the street!
Sephora's Atomic Mascara -
My favorite part about this mascara is that it does a great job and keeping your eyelashes separated, even after multiple applications, which I find all of my other mascaras (I have at least 5 different brands) start clumping after the first application.

Product Review: Bare Minerals Foundation

I'm on a search for the best foundation/powder out there. My "solution" at the moment is to just try it all, so when my MAC liquid foundation and pressed powder was running low, I made the switch to Bare Minerals. The Bare Minerals website, http://www.bareescentuals.com/, says the following about the Bare Minerals foundation:
"Our ORIGINAL SPF 15 Foundation gives you all the flawless coverage you want with a naturally luminous finish that won't clump or cake. It's clinically proven to improve the appearance of your skin over time. The creamy minerals diminish the look of fine lines and wrinkles without drying out your skin. Its silky, soft texture looks like a powder, but feels like a cream and buffs on beautifully. Made with only the purest, highest quality ingredients. It's makeup so pure you can sleep in it.®" I definitely agree that it doesn't clump or cake and I LOVE LOVE LOVE this about BareMinerals! One of my bigger issues with MAC foundation is that I definitely feel like it's cake, however - I have used it in a way that doesn't make me feel that way, but that's for another time. Another great pro - it definitely covers my imperfections and makes me appear as though my skin is flawless, not the makeup. However, there is a down side which I have found to be disappointing - unlike my MAC foundation and powder which last for at least most of the day, I have not had that experience with BareMinerals and that's something that is really disappointing for me. I work with children and when I wore MAC foundation and powder to work, it was still there at the end of the day. Not so much with Bare Minerals - by noon the imperfections of my skin are fully visible, as if I hadn't put makeup on that morning.
After a few days of this happening, I popped in the introduction DVD BareMinerals is so nice to include to re-watch it, under the assumption that this was 100% user error. This wasn't the case. The DVD says that you only need to use a very minimum amount to achieve full coverage. I have not found this to be accurate. In order to elliminate most of the redness of my skin, I have to go over my face 3-5 times and it doesn't eliminate all of the redness, some of it just turns to light pink.
I do greatly enjoy the fact that it doesn't feel oily or heavy like MAC tends to, but I appreciate the longevity of the MAC foundation and powder way more.

So at this point, when my BareMinerals runs out, unless something changes - which I will update on if it does - I will be trying a new brand next go around. MAC is still winning at the moment.

Product Review: OPI Drip Dry

Back in January, the Hubster had the opportunity (and in my opinion priviledge) to go the Long Beach ISSE Show. Unfortunately, I had to go to work while he got to go play. Lucky for me though, he picked up some fun goodies! I was so excited when he showed me that he had picked up OPI DripDry Laquer Drying Drops. 'Cause let's face it, how many times have you gone to do your nails and have them get messed up right before you leave? I don't know about you, but this happens to me frequently.
According to OPI, DripDry Laquer Drying Drops "Dries nails to the touch in one minute, completely in five, with just 1 to 2 drops. Soothes cuticles with jojoba. Recommendation: When you need to get out the door in a hurry!"
I'm calling their bluff.
While I definitely agree with the fact that it really does dry nails to the touch in one minute, I completely disagree with it drying completely in 5 minutes. Luckily when I used it, it was a weekend so I didn't have much to do - and I'm usually skeptical about "quick drying" anything related to nail laquer. So I painted my toes, waited just long enough while I read through the instructions of OPI DripDry and followed them. I applied 2 drops like instructed, put my feet up for a minute and then tested to see if they were actually dry to the touch. They were! In all seriousness, I was ecstatic. It was working, but I was still skeptical. I continued to put my feet up for an hour - one full hour. According to the product, they were completely dry and I was free to do whatever I pleased. I spent the next hour cautiously walking around the house completing chores and then hopped in the shower. Much to my dismay, when I got out after waiting 1 hour and 55 minutes longer than I should have had to, my nails were damaged! They were all wrinkly, like when you put on a pair of cute shoes before the polish is dry and they get all smudged... you know what I mean.

So, OPI - what's the deal? Why was the nail polish, which was also OPI, damged so much after waiting almost 2 hours? I've had better luck with the 99 cent brands...I will be giving it another shot, but from a cautious first use with outcomes as they were, I won't be expecting much better the second time around.
